“15 minutes can change your life”. It sounds farfetched, doesn’t it? After all, it’s “only 15 minutes”. Such a small and seemingly insignificant amount of time, wouldn’t you say?
But think of all the people whose lives have been irrevocably changed in an instant.
So, it doesn’t sound so farfetched after all does it?
But – on a daily, uneventful day – how can 15 minutes possibly change our lives?
I first heard the notion – back when I was still a young military spouse and stay-at-home-mom.
Dh had only been back in the military for a couple of years. I had just been laid off from my job as an administrative assistant, and we decided – since Dh was facing his first, ever deployment – it would be a good idea for me to stay-at-home with the kids. They were young – BB was in kindergarten, and PB was still a toddler.
It was about that time I discovered the FlyLady.
I had never been a full-time mom and domestic goddess.
If I was to retain some semblance of sanity, I some sort of routine… guidance.
She was the one that taught me, “anyone can do anything for 15 minutes.”
And while I have long since stopped “FLYing”, the notion stayed with me.
Falling Into Bad Habits
Since the outbreak of the Covid Pandemic, I have admittedly fallen into “bad” habits. In other words… habits that do not serve my highest and best purpose.
I stopped exercising, meditation has been spotty at best, and my eating habits. Not the best in the least!
As a result, I have noticed I’ve been feeling sluggish and not feeling as good as I know I could. It’s for that reason I’ve known for some time now that I needed to change things back around. Still… I have been lacking in motivation.
My Sulky Inner Child
Each of us has within our being a child. It is our spirit, our emotional self, and times that child can be just as pouty as any two-year-old that doesn’t get its way.
Mine does not like “exercise”. According to her, it’s “just not fun”.
“Eh, it’s okay as long as we’re going somewhere that will be fun once we get there.” A holdover from all the times my grandma would take me on long walks to the park across town or Dairy Queen, a museum, or train ride.
“They’re only fun when we have friends around to do them with us.”
So, getting around to exercising… it just hasn’t been my top priority as of late.
Anyone Can Do Anything for 15 Minutes
“Anyone can do anything for 15 minutes.” It’s a notion that I’ve recently pulled back out of my personal development toolbox.
“You only have to do this for 15 minutes,” I tell my sulky Inner Child. “If, after 15 minutes, you’re not having fun with it, we can stop.”
This, in addition to putting in my earbuds to listen to some fun music she can inwardly dance to and the endorphins that start flooding my system by (or before) the 15 minute have been my saving grace! I’m getting 30 minutes on the treadmill each morning, at least.
I’m not long into re-establishing this habit. At the time of this writing, I’m only two days in, but it’s a start!
The choices we make, sometimes moment to moment, are the foundation upon which we build our lives. And it is the quality of those choices that determine the strength of that foundation.
15 minutes can truly change our lives, for the better, if we allow it to!
