3:30 am wake up and out of bed by 4am. Sound familiar? The “Witching Hour”. It’s more of a common occurrence for me than I would like and something that I’m noticing among my friends via their status updates on social media.
Though it may be for us, it’s nothing new.
I remember my dad often waking up this early more mornings than not.
We’re in good company, though.
Early morning was when Dr Wayne Dyer wrote most of his books and Bill Gates is reported to be a member of the “4am Club”.
David Haldorsen, who is a Certified Sleep Science Coach, states, “for many people, waking up at 5 AM most days, is totally worth it.”
But 4am… If we can do it in a “healthy way”, he says, “could be even better”.
Mr Haldorsen goes on to say, “an increasing number of millionaires, billionaires, productivity experts, and artists are joining the early morning wake-up club.”
Even former first lady Michelle Obama is said to be a member of the 4am Club.
What is it, though, that causes these people to routinely start their day at what most would consider to be a “god awful” hour?
The Spiritual Significance of Early Waking
In many cultures, it is believed that 4am is when “the veil” – the unseen energetic barrier that separates our world from that of the spiritual – is at its “thinnest” point during the day. As a result, it’s much easier for the inhabitants of the spiritual realm to communicate with us.
Now, I’m not saying those who – in our physical world – are considered successful are because they get up early to “speak to spirits”. However, because the veil is at its thinnest, it is much easier for our Spiritual Team (our guides and angels) to communicate with us. Their guidance is more clear and easier for us to receive.
What To Do?
So, what should we do if we find ourselves awakening at 4am on a fairly regular basis?
You could keep a journal and a pen on your nightstand. Write down everything and anything that comes to you. Even if it doesn’t make sense at the time. It may very well make sense in the days to come.
Then, if you’re able to go back to sleep… Good for you! Do it.
If not, do not lament. Make the most of the quiet time you have been “given”.
I know, it can be difficult to see it that way. Particularly when this is a rather new occurrence in your life. But – if we choose to see it – there is something rather magical about the early morning hours.
To me, it is like having the world all to myself – and Spirit.

Do you find yourself regularly waking up around 3 or 4am each night? Next time this happens, remember this poem from Rumi and don’t go back to sleep. These hours before dawn are when you are close to Source, and a great time of inspiration and creativity. Put your feet on the floor, get out of bed, feel the morning breeze, and listen to your inner thoughts.
